Melancholia

My newest work, composed on mylar, combines the unforgiving nature of both material and realism. I interview my sitters, asking them “if you had one chance to show yourself truthfully, and one chance to tell the world who you are, what would you say?” often getting incredible answers that shine a light not only on each person’s own experience but on the universal human experience as well. I take these statements and use them to carefully compose portraits that exist as a singular narrative and an autobiography simultaneously. The process is illuminating, and the project has brought a good deal of introspection both to my practice and in the lives of participants.
